Many people who buy heavy-duty SUVs shouldn't. Complex 4WD systems, armoured undersides and height just aren't a necessity of the modern suburban driving experience. However, if you mix your daily urban driving with towing, dirt-road driving or high-country adventuring, then an SUV starts to makes sense. Pajero has been around in one form or another for 23 years. But in recent years it has lagged behind Toyota's much-lauded Prado at the serious end of the medium SUV market, while the soft-roader Ford Territory has also snatched many buyers. But the NS generation launched last year has bucked things up. Pajero's sales are now up nearly 50 per cent up on last year's.
